Photograph Baseball Teams

A baseball diamond can serve a backdrop for your team's photograph.

A summer baseball team usually holds fond memories for players, coaches and parents, and one of the best ways to capture those memories is with a team photo. Whether you are taking a photo of a Little League squad or a much more professional outfit, the principles are the same. You want the team members to look their best, and you want to capture them in a natural environment such as the dugout or baseball diamond.

Instructions

1. Select a date and time for your photo session. The best time is before the team starts to warm up for a game, when the players are in uniform but the uniforms are still clean. Choose a sunny day when all or most team members will be present.

2. Choose a backdrop for your photo. Most teams take their photos on the baseball diamond, with the players on the green grass of the infield area.

3. Align the players in two rows, with shorter players in the front on a knee and taller players standing behind them. If there is an even number of players, have them stand in two parallel rows. If there is an odd number of players, place one fewer player in the front row and have the members of the front row kneel directly in the middle of two players behind them. Flank the team's coaches on the edge of the player group or, if the coaches are tall enough, behind the last row of players.

4. Check the frame's alignment by using the camera's digital viewfinder or the eyepiece. Make sure that items in the background, such as the field's foul poles and advertisements, do not fall into the field of vision. Realign the players outside the view of those distractions if necessary.

5. Decorate the front of the image frame, the space in front of the players but still within the parameters of the photo, with items of significance to the team. Although this is not necessary, team photos often include baseball bats, a mitt and ball or trophies the team has won.

6. Take several photos of the team in the same position. Since you'll be shooting the photo during sunny conditions, it is unlikely you'll need to use a flash. If you have the opportunity to check the photos in the camera's memory system before you leave the field, do so. Make sure the players are smiling and looking at the camera, and take more images if necessary.

7. Download the photos onto your computer; if you used a film camera, send them off for processing. If the photos are on your computer, use photo editing software to crop or otherwise adjust the photos.
