Perhaps you need to keep track of an employee while they are driving around town on company time. Or maybe you want to know where your significant other is at any given time. Whatever the case, using a cell phone as a GPS tracker is a good way of keeping tabs on your friends, family or employees. It's simple to set up and, if you use the right software programs, it's almost completely free to use.
Instructions
1. Get a cell phone that is Web-enabled. If you don't have one, you can buy an inexpensive prepaid phone online or at electronics or big-box retailers.
2. Find software that suits your needs. There are several free packages to investigate. These include Google Maps for Mobile, Instamapper and Mologogo (see Resources). Any of these programs will turn your Web-enabled cell phone into a GPS tracking device.
3. Register with the site by entering your phone number, creating a user name and password, and submitting a valid email address.
4. Wait for the text message. Once you receive it, go to the download link that is provided using your Web-enabled phone, by going to the "Main Menu" and "Applications" and opening up your Internet browser.
5. Install the software once you have downloaded it. Click on the program and follow the instructions. Restart your phone.
6. Log on to the site that you have chosen to use and you will see a blinking dot next to your user name. This is the phone. Simply follow it on the map and you will be able to track it. Use the "+" and "-" buttons to zoom in or zoom out and the navigation arrows to pan left to right or up and down. You can now track this phone from any Web-enabled computer, cell phone or PDA.
