There is a lot of content on television that you may not want your children to view. Unfortunately, you may not be around at all times while they are watching television, meaning you may not always be able to monitor what they are watching. For digital television providers like Dish Network and DirecTV, there are parental control options that allow you to block specific content from showing on your television based on a variety of criteria, such as the show's rating or specific content found in a show.
Instructions
DirecTV
1. Press "Menu" on the remote control and select "Parental, Fav's & Setup."
2. Choose "Parental Controls," then choose "Edit Settings."
3. Select "Ratings." Select the "TV" tab and choose which TV ratings to allow (as in, selecting "TV-Y" allows viewers to watch shows rated "TV-Y" on that television.) When you block a rating to not allow viewing of a show with a specific rating, the symbol next to the rating changes from a green circle to a white circle with a red line going through it.
4. Enter your four-digit passcode when prompted to confirm your settings.
Dish Network
5. Press the "Menu" button on the remote and select the "Locks" option.
6. Enter your four-digit password if prompted, then select "Ratings Locks."
7. Choose the least restrictive rating you want to block. For example, if you choose to block the "PG-13" rating, the "R" and "NC-17" ratings are automatically blocked as well.
8. Choose which expanded ratings you wish to block as well. Options include shows with nudity, violence, adult language and sexual situations.
9. Select "Done," then enter your four-digit password if prompted.
