Many cable TV companies now offer self-installation kits and they are relatively easy to assemble. The only extra things you will need are tools that you may already have in your home (a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and batteries if needed).
Installation Step 1
Verify that you have a complete self-installation kit. Your kit should include:
Digital receiver and detachable power cord
RF cable
Coaxial cable or cables
Installation guide
Digital receiver remote with programming guide
Hookup diagram to connect additional audio/visual equipment
Place the digital receiver somewhere that has proper ventilation and is at least 4 inches away from other electrical equipment. Next, plug your detachable power cord into your digital receiver and plug the power cord into the desired wall outlet. Attach one end of your coaxial cable (extension coming from the wall) to the cable IN port of the digital receiver.
Installation Step 2
In most cases, you will need to call the cable company to authorize connectivity of the digital receiver. Once the digital receiver is authorized, connect one end of the coaxial cable from your self installation kit to the TV/VCR port of the digital receiver and the other end to your TV (Note: you should use your hookup diagram to connect additional audio/visual equipment). Place your batteries inside your cable TV remote and use the programming guide to program your remote to your TV and digital receiver. Once the connection is made to your TV, use the remote to turn on your TV and change the channel to channel 3. At this time you should see a menu guide at the bottom of your screen.
Trouble-shooting Any Connection Issues
If you come across any problems like a snowy picture, there a few steps you can take to resolve the problem. Make sure both digital receiver and TV are powered on. Next, make sure your connections are tight. After checking the connections, unplug your digital receiver from the wall and wait 10 seconds then plug it back into the wall outlet. This should reset the box and reestablish the connection. If these things do not work, call your cable provider for further technical support.
