With a Uniden Bearcat 170 Scanner, you can listen to police, county and city workers, buses and local government agencies. If someone is using a portable radio with a frequency within the ranges of the scanner, you can program the frequency into the scanner and hear what is going on.

1. Program the frequencies into the scanner. Press the "Scan Button", and then press the "Manual Button." On the keypad, enter the channel number where you want to store the frequency and the press "Manual." Enter the frequency number using the keypad. Enter the frequency for 189.987 by pressing 1, 8, 9 and the "Dot Button", 9, 8 and then 7. If you do make a mistake, you simply press the "Dot Button" twice to restart your entry. After you enter the frequency, press "E" for enter.
2. Delete an entry by selecting "Manual" and entering the channel number. If you do not know the channel number, use "Scan Button" to find the channel. Once you have the channel, press 0 on the keypad and then "E" for enter. The frequency will be erased.
3. Keep a channel on at all times by pressing "Manual" and entering the channel number and then pressing "Manual" or you can lockout the other channels using the "L/O Button" on every other channel. To undo the lockout feature, go to each locked out channel and press the "L/O Button" again to reactivate the channel.
4. Listen to an active channel by pressing the "Delay Button." This button will keep the channel displayed for two seconds after the transmission has ended. This way, if a transmission is answered right away, you will not miss it. To undo the delay feature, simply press the "Delay Button" again.
5. Set the squelch by turning the "Squelch Knob" all the way up so that you hear all the static and then slowly turning down until you have no static. This ensures that you will hear all of the frequencies without the static interference from some channels. You can then keep the scanner on scan all the time without any frequency interruptions from other channels.
