Your Android phone can quickly scan various bar codes to download information about products and services. Bar codes, also called QR (Quick Reference) codes, can be found on many common items. You can use your Android's camera to scan the codes, which will then be translated into data, links or websites. To scan and translate codes, you'll need to use a bar code reader application. These applications are readily available in the Android Market if you do not have one installed on your device. Many are free of charge.
Instructions
Install a Bar code Reader App
1. Touch the "Applications" launcher, located on your Android's home screen. Your full list of apps will open. Scroll through the list and touch "Market." The Android Market will open.
2. Touch the "Search" (magnifying glass) icon, located on the top right side of the page. A search box opens. Type Barcode Scanner" in the box, then a list of results will display.
3. Touch an application from the list to view more details and read reviews. To download an application, touch the "Install" button. The application permissions will display.
4. Accept the application's permissions by touching "Accept and Download." Your application will install. Touch the "Home" key to return to your home screen.
Scanning Codes
5. Touch the "Applications" launcher to open your full list of apps. Scroll through the list, then touch the icon for your bar code reader application.
6. Touch the "Scan" option, displayed on your screen. Your Android's camera will launch, displaying the viewfinder on your screen.
7. Point your camera at the bar code you wish to scan, positioning it so the code is centered on your screen. The code will scan and information will be displayed.
