Canon DLSR cameras are an ideal tool for the aspiring amateur photographer. They offer interchangeable lenses and high-image resolution, plus an image viewfinder with LED displays. The viewfinders use through the lens viewing and provide useful shooting information and multi-point auto focus readings. Canon DSLR cameras come with the necessary software for image viewing, editing and storage. To get started with your Canon DSLR, you'll need to attach the lens, charge and insert the battery, load the memory card and install the image editing software on your computer.
Instructions
Setup
1. Insert the battery into the provided charger. When the status lamp on the charger glows steadily, your battery is fully charged. Remove the battery from the charger, flip the lever on the bottom of the camera to open the battery compartment and insert the battery.
2. Remove the rear lens cap from the lens provided with your DSLR. Remove the body cap from the camera body by pressing the release button next to the lens mount, turning the cap to release. Mount the lens on the camera by lining up the matching indicators on the lens with the corresponding dot on the camera. On EF-S lens these dots are white, and on EF lenses they are red. Insert the lens and rotate toward the shutter release until it fits securely.
3. Insert your camera's memory card by opening the door on the right side of the camera body. Be sure the edge of the card with the tiny metal slots goes into the camera first. Close the door, and the camera is ready for taking pictures.
Taking and Viewing Pictures
4. Set the camera's power switch to "On," and turn the "Mode" dial to "Auto," the green rectangle on the dial. Look through the camera's viewfinder and gently press the shutter button halfway down. When the shutter reaches halfway, you''ll see the auto focus points light up in the center of the viewfinder, and the shooting information will be displayed near the bottom.
5. Point the camera at different objects and watch how the auto focus points change, along with shutter speed, aperture, and exposure readings. Press the shutter all the way down to take a picture. Take several pictures to get a feel for the camera, and for practice loading images onto your computer.
6. Load the provided Canon image-editing software for your camera onto your computer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once the software has been installed it will detect your camera whenever you connect it to the computer.
7. Insert the provided USB cable into a USB port on your computer. Locate the USB port on the left side of your camera. It is protected by a rubber cover, pry this back to reveal the port, and insert the small end of the cable. Turn the camera on. The software should detect the camera and offer to transfer the images. Check to see if the folder selected is where you want your pictures, and click to download. The image editing software will open and display your pictures, along with the shooting information.
