The most recent versions of Adobe Photoshop have the ability to directly import 3D files like Wavefront OBJ or 3DS and position them in the scene. You can even apply new textures to the models by painting them with the tools. There are several aspects to this process.
Creating the Scene
Start by creating a scene for your 3D object. Open Photoshop. Then go to "File" and click "New." In the dialog box that will open, make the width and height in pixels whatever you need for your project. The resolution you select will depend on your project. If you are creating a printed ad, you will probably want to set it to at least 300 pixels, where if you are making something for the web you can leave it at 72 pixels. Click "OK."
You will now need to decide what kind of background you want to use. You could "Copy" and "Paste" a photograph into the background, using the scale and move functions to get it where you want it. Or you could do a simple color or gradient fill. To do this, go to the "Fill" tools and select either the "Paint Bucket" or "Gradient" tool. Choose the color or gradient you want to use and fill the canvas by clicking on it.
Import The 3D Model
Now you will import the 3D model into the scene you have made for it. In the menu, select "Layers," then "3D Layers" and click "New Layer From 3D File." In the dialog box that now opens, browse to the 3D model you want to use and select it. A new 3D layer will appear in the "Layer" panel.
Now right-click on the 3D layer you just created and click "Transform 3D Model." In the options at the top adjust the scale of the 3D object to the size of your canvas.
Painting Your Model
Now you will paint a new texture or textures for your model to replace or alter the one it has. Click on the 3D layer to open up its sub-layers. You will see at least one texture layer. You may see more if your model has separate texture maps applied to different parts of the model. Edit the texture layer you want to work with by double-clicking it.
A new document will open showing the texture. You can now use the various "Paint" brushes to paint the texture any way you want. When you are finished, click "CTRL" and "S." This will apply the new texture to the model. Now save your document.
