Proper identification becomes important when replacing the button battery in a watch, remote control, computer, calculator, electronic organizer or other device. It's also helpful to determine which button battery types are equivalent.
Battery Type
Examine the flat side of the button battery, using a magnifier if necessary. Look for a model number like "CR2016," "V76PX," "SR41" or "AG5." The brand name, voltage and other markings don't hold as much importance for identification.
Equivalents
Often a specific type of button battery will become hard to find, expensive or discontinued. A battery cross-reference chart helps with the identification of equivalent batteries (see Resources). For example, charts show that an "LR44" is the same as an "AG13."
Assistance
If you can't determine the type of button battery, take it to a store that sells watches, cameras or electronics. Bring the device it powers as well. A store employee can help you with identification and replacement of the battery.
