Release Pressure From A Pressure Cooker

Many foods cook faster in a pressure cooker, from roasts to soups and beans. Since pressure cookers and canners cook food under pressure, you need to be very careful when using them. Pressure, in the from of steam, can cause severe burns if not released before opening the cooker lid. Unlike pressure canners, which must release the pressure naturally, there are a number of ways you can release the pressure in a pressure cooker quickly and safely.

Instructions

For Vegetables and Fish Recipes

1. Cook the recipe according to the instructions that came with your model of pressure cooker.

2. Remove the cooker from the heat.

3. Hold the cooker under the sink faucet and run cold water over the cooker for up to a minute to allow the pressure to dissipate.

For Meat and Dried Vegetable Recipes

4. Remove the cooker from the heat after the specified cooking time.

5. Allow the cooker to cool and release pressure naturally for 5 minutes.

6. Place the cooker under cold, running water until the pressure has been fully released.

Ensuring Pressure Release

7. Insert the tines of a fork beneath the pressure control and lift the control gently.

8. Continue to run the water over the pressure cooker if any hissing sound emits from the cooker as the control is lifted.

9. Try to open the lid of the cooker. If any amount of force needs to be used, the pressure has not been fully released. Run more cold water over the cooker, if necessary, to open the lid easily.
