D200 Nikon Specs

The Nikon D200 features 10.2 megapixels and a magnesium-alloy body.

When announced in November 2005, Nikon's D200 had specifications that came close to Nikon's then top-of-the-line camera, the D2X. The D200 boasted improvements over its predecessor and won numerous awards from the photo industry press. The D200 features 10.2 megapixels, a 96 percent coverage viewfinder and a magnesium-alloy body. The D200 also features dust and moisture sealing for added strength and security.

Megapixels/Image Size

The Nikon D200 comes equipped with a 10.92 total megapixel sensor and utilizes 10.2 effective megapixels. When used at its largest image capture setting, the D200 produces images 3,872 pixels wide and 2,592 pixels high. At the camera's medium image capture setting, it produces images 2,896 pixels wide and 1,944 pixels high, and at its lowest image capture setting it produces images 1,936 pixels wide and 1,296 pixels high.

Sensor Type

The Nikon D200 uses Nikon's DX format charge-coupled device sensor. The DX format sensor does not capture full 24 mm-wide and 36 mm-high image data like Nikon's full-frame FX format sensors. DX format sensors measure 15.8 mm wide and 23.6 mm high.

File Format/Storage

The Nikon D200 captures images in two formats -- Nikon's uncompressed proprietary image format called NEF, often referred to as RAW, and standard JPEG format. The D200 captures images in either 12-bit or 14-bit RAW formats. Users can store images on CompactFlashType I or II cards or on MicroDrive cards.

Exposure Modes

The D200 offers users four basic exposure modes -- programmed auto exposure, shutter-priority automatic, aperture-priority automatic and metered manual. The camera also provides seven image-optimization options for shooting in automatic mode -- normal, softer, vivid, more vivid, portrait, custom, and black and white.

Shooting Modes

The D200 provides five shooting modes -- single-frame shooting, continuous high-speed shooting at five-frames per second, continuous low-speed shooting at one to four frames per second, mirror up mode and self-timer mode. In mirror up mode, the first press of the shutter release moves the mirror up while the second press releases the mirror and captures the image.

ISO Range

The Nikon D200 has an automatic ISO sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The camera also has an optional expanded ISO sensitivity option named Hi-1 that allows users to set an ISO equivalent speed of ISO 3,200.

Monitor

The D200 utilizes a 2 1/2-inch diagonal TFT LCD monitor with 230,000 dots.

Additional Specifications

The D200 offers exposure compensation at ±5 exposure value in increments of 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV and 1 EV. The camera also provides exposure bracketing from two to nine exposures in 1, 2 or 3 EV increments. Nikon's D200 also makes use of Nikon's built-in lens-focusing motor, called the Nikon Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module. This module allows the D200 camera to use older Nikon autofocus lenses while retaining the lens' autofocus capabilities. The D200 has a built-in flash, offers flash bracketing and has a flash sync speed of 1/250th of a second. The camera has a shutter speed range of 1/8000th of a second to 30 seconds.

Dimensions

The Nikon D200 measures 5.8 inches wide, 4.4 inches high and 2.9 inches deep. The camera weighs approximately 29.3 oz.
