Store Camera Lenses

Store your lenses properly to prevent dust or mold from collecting on them.

For the most part, camera lenses are fairly durable and designed to withstand some minimal exposure to dust and moisture. More expensive professional lenses will have increased seals and coatings designed to withstand a higher degree of exposure to Mother Nature. If you are not going to be using your lenses for an extended period of time, there are a few things you can do to keep them safe and have them ready to use the next time.

Instructions

1. Clean the front and rear glass elements on your lens. Use a microfiber lens cloth to do this, and do it gently in a dry room with minimal dust. If you have a 1A daylight filter on the front of your lens, now is a good time to remove it, clean it and re-attach it to the lens.

2. Place lens caps on the front and rear of your lens. Lens caps will not only protect the glass and prevent dust from getting in--the rear cap will also protect the electrical contacts that are part of modern auto-focus lenses.

3. Place the lens into a lens pouch, and include one or two small silica gel packs in the lens pouch as well. These small packets are designed to absorb any moisture in the pouch.

4. Put the lens pouches in an airtight container that also has two or three silica gel packs. Close the container and store in a cool, dry area in your home.
