Use A Sunpak Flash

Stand 3 to 14 feet away from your subject while using a Sunpak.

The primary purpose of a Sunpak flash is to provide extra light to a subject or scene of which you are about to take a picture. Upon obtaining your flash, you may have some questions about its basic operation. Following a few steps will have you operating your flash effectively and efficiently in little time. Learn to properly power your device, mount the flash onto your camera's hot shoe, turn your flash on, perform a flash test, prepare your camera for picture taking and take your first picture.

Instructions

1. Place batteries into the battery chamber to power the device. Turn the flash onto its side and slip open the battery chamber cover with your fingers. The chamber is located on the right side of the flash if you're looking at the flash from behind. Install four alkaline or nickel-cadmium AA batteries into the chamber. Be sure to mind the polarity indicators printed on the inside of the chamber. Replace the battery cover chamber; it snaps into place.

2. Mount the flash on top of any camera with a hot shoe, which is a flash mount located on top of the camera. Turn the ring at the bottom of the flash counterclockwise to loosen it. Match the rectangular plate to the camera's hot shoe and slip it in with the flash facing the same direction as the camera lens. After the flash is properly fitted to the hot shoe, turn the ring at the bottom of the flash clockwise to tighten the fit and secure the connection.

3. Slide the "On/Off" switch, located on the back of the flash to the left of the ASA/ISO meter, to "On." You should see the "Ready" light, located below the "On/Off" switch, illuminate an amber color after the flash has charged and is ready to fire. This takes approximately three seconds.

4. Perform a flash test to ensure that your flash is functioning properly. Push the "Flash Test" button, located at the bottom of the flash on the back below the "Ready" light, while the "Ready" light is glowing. Your flash should fire and immediately begin to recharge.

5. Prepare your camera to take a picture by first assuring that the power switch is set next to the "A" (Automatic) icon. Perform a flash test by aiming the flash at your subject and firing the "Flash Test" button. The flash will fire without need of pushing the shutter release button on your camera, and if the light is correct, the "Auto OK" light, to the right of the "Ready" light, will illuminate green.

6. Take your first picture by first confirming that your aperture and shutter speed settings are set to your desire. Confirm that the "Ready" light is illuminated on the back of the flash, and frame your subject through your camera's viewfinder. When all camera settings are correct, fully depress the camera's shutter release button. The flash will fire, and your camera will snap the picture.
