Avoid Nextel Termination Fees

Cellular service providers are notorious for levying exorbitant fees when customers want to exit contracts early. These early termination fees can be as high as $200 for Nextel users. To avoid Nextel termination fees, it is important to follow the letter of your contract very closely and follow the right procedure in a timely manner. It is possible to break a Nextel contract without paying cancellation fees, but it may take several tries.

Instructions

1. Read your Nextal contract very carefully. Look for a clause the provides for termination without a fee in the case of a material change to the terms that has a materially adverse affect on you. This wording is very important, as it is the loophole that will free you from your contract.

2. Wait for Nextel to change their terms. Check your e-mail and mailbox diligently for any correspondence from Nextel. When you receive a letter from Nextel, read it through carefully and look for any material changes. Material changes can include changes in text messaging rates, disclosure information, coverage, usage limitations and other charges.

3. Call Nextel customer support. Have your contract and the letter from Nextel delineating the recent changes to your contract with you.

4. Read the customer service representative the line in the contract that describes the materially adverse change to your terms. Ask the representative if this change affects you. If it does not, you may not have a case.

5. Read the part of the contract that discusses your right to exit the contract without a cancellation fee to the customer service representative. Confirm the meaning of this clause.

6. Request to have your service canceled without incurring an early termination fee pursuant to the material changes clause in your contract and the recent change as delineated in the letter.

7. Be persistent. You may meet resistance from the first wave of customer service representatives. Firmly, but politely, ask to speak with a supervisor and explain your situation to them. If it is possible to cancel your contract without paying a fee, they will be able to help you.
