Transfer Camcorder Tapes

It is possible to transfer video files to your computer system.

After you have finished recording audio and video onto a camcorder tape, you may want to transfer the data onto a computer system. There are many different tapes currently used, but all upload the same way to a computer system (although the cable used for the transfer may differ slightly). Once the files are saved onto the computer you will be able to edit the video or burn the data onto a CD or DVD.

Instructions

1. Check your computer system for a FireWire port. FireWire provides a faster file transfer than USB, but is not available on all computers. FireWire is similar in size to USB, but one end of the connection port is curved and a "Y" image is printed next to the port.

2. Plug the FireWire cable into the FireWire port on your digital camera, then insert the opposite end into the FireWire port on your computer. If you don't have a FireWire port, connect a USB cable to the camera and the computer.

3. Open Windows Movie Maker (found on the Windows "Start" menu), then power on the video camera.

4. Select "Capture," then choose the connected video camera. Click "Record" and the computer begins to upload video content from your video camcorder tape. Click "Record" again at any time to stop the transfer process.
