Make Your Own Beauty Dish

For many photographers, taking photos is their passion, whether it be a hobby or career. But equipment can get expensive, and by doing it yourself you can have equipment for a fraction of the cost. Beauty dishes add a soft, white light to your subjects, eliminating the harsh lights and shadows that come with regular flashes. Building your own beauty light gives you the chance to photograph illuminated scenes without spending a bundle of money.

Instructions

1. Use a mini saw to cut a hole out of the bottom of your bowl and CD spool that is the size of your flash.

2. Fit your gutter connector into the hole in your bowl, from the outside. Fit your CD spool onto the gutter connector from the inside, with the bottom of the spool down.

3. Mark and drill four holes through your CD spool and bowl. Screw together.

4. Paint the inside of your bowl white and the outside black. Set aside and allow to dry.

5. Glue your convex mirror onto the bottom of your CD, then glue your CD to the inside of your CD spool lid. Allow drying time.

6. Once everything is dry, screw your CD lid back onto the base of the spool.

7. Secure two strips of velcro to the outside base of the bowl, just outside of the hole. Insert your flash and fasten it with your velcro strip.
