Troubleshoot A Sony Digital Camcorder

Fix the recording problems on your Sony digital video camera.

Although Sony video cameras typically run smoothly as there are few moving parts, therefore leaving potential issues to a bare minimum, it is possible to run into the occasional problem. Typically, these issues revolve around the camera not recording to the image appearing dirty. Whatever the problem is, you are able to correct it in a few troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

1. Charge the battery in the Sony digital video camera. If the battery is nearly depleted, the camera is not going to stay on, often cutting out in the middle of a recording. Always have the battery charged before starting a new shoot.

2. Clean off the camera lens with a lens cloth if the image appears grainy or if there are strange spots on your recorded content. This is from dust and dirt stuck to the lens. A soft lens cloth removes this debris, clearing up the image.

3. Delete recorded video from the hard drive of the video camera (if the Sony video camera uses a hard drive). When attempting to record you may receive an error message stating the camera is unable to capture any more content. This is due to the hard drive being full. Remove unwanted video content to continue recording.

4. Spray compressed air into the miniDV tape compartment if using a tape-based video camera. Dust settles into this compartment, attaches itself to the tape and may run streaks across the tape, causing image problems. The compressed air removes the dust from the compartment.

5. Watch your hand placement when recording. Sony cameras typically place the microphone directly under the lens. If your hand touches the microphone, you are going to receive feedback when recording, including a scratching noise and muffled audio. Keep your hand under the video camera to ensure this does not happen.
