Stand-alone DVRs and PC-based DVRs are two models of the new generation of DVRs. Both perform the normal recording functions but are significantly different in their makeup. Here are few points of comparison.

1. Compare the sizes and components. Coming with all the components compressed into one box, stand-alone DVRs are compact while PC-based DVRs are created around a computer and come with attachments like the separate CPU, keyboard, a USB mouse and monitor. A stand-alone DVR occupies less shelf space while performing similar functions.


2. Understand the utility of both DVRs. Get the stand-alone DVRs for fundamental requirements. They offer recording, viewing and programming ease, along with Internet access while the PC-based DVRs accommodate advanced features such as improved screens, improved motion detection facilities and Internet viability.


3. Compare the user friendliness of both. The stand-alone DVRs can be handled by any layman due to its clear-cut program interface and control buttons. It requires no special computer expertise. However, a PC-based DVR requires specialized computer knowledge.








4. Compare the storage space. Although the stand-alone DVR has ample recording and storing space, the PC-based DVR features as much as 7 times more storage because of a larger CPUs and memory.


5. Check out sophisticated features. The PC-based DVR has superior characteristics such as better reception of playback programs, colored bars for easy search, four times better speed, CD-ROM burner, DVD burner and easily attachable hard drives.


6. Acquaint yourself with the surveillance functions of both the equipments. The stand-alone DVRs come with up to 16 video inputs and are suitable for small space surveillance. On the other hand, the PC-based ones can accommodate as high as 32 and hence are ideal for malls, movie theatres, departmental stores, hospitals and industry units.


7. Compare the prices. The PC-based DVRs are more expensive than the stand-alone ones.
