Choose A Vocal Microphone

Just as with creating a custom recording chain for a vocalist or instrumentalist you want to determine which mic is a fit for a particular duty. Nothing is ever the same and even multiple components within the same song require a different mic.

Here I will discuss some practical application to get you headed in the right direction.

Instructions

1. Let's imagine for a moment the variables among vocalists. No two are ever alike and no song is alike. Sure there are many that bare an influence, but are never exactly the same.

So be prepared for anything and everything. Just remember that you can adapt and "make lemonade out of lemons."

2. When recording a vocalist the objective is to always ensure an amazing performance. This requires us to create an environment in which the performer feels comfortable. The more confident they are, the better they will sing. Sure there are divas, but that's something different altogether. We prepare a little differently when they are visiting.

So in choosing a microphone you must pay close attention to how the vocalist performs. I have encountered many who do their best work while holding the mic. Perhaps they have spent more time on stage than in the studio. It's certainly not uncommon.

Many famous vocalists have relegated the highly revered and expensive microphones to the mic locker. These vocalists include: Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chile Peppers), Fred Durst (Limp Biskit), Michael Jackson and Bono, among others.

Sometimes a simple handheld microphone is perfect. The Shure SM7, Sennheiser 441 or even a Shure SM57/58 is great.

3. We must also consider how the vocalist approaches singing in a particular environment. Some prefer not to wear headphones. So it is a good idea to bring them into the control room with you.

Bono, for instance, has a long history of tracking inside the control room with nothing more than a $75 Shure SM58. He also chooses to stand right between the big speakers blasting away.

4. In closing, we should have established the fact that all situations are different. We as recording engineers must adapt and be prepared to make quick decisions in order to fully accommodate the artist.

Happy recording!
