A DTV converter box is a device which will allow your analog television to display digital TV. However, installing this device will likely wreak havoc with your current VCR setup. The good news is that you can use the same basic methods to connect most DTV converters, television sets and VCRs. The key to setting up home entertainment equipment successfully is to understand the function of inputs and outputs. If you know the basics, you'll be able to connect any brand equipment without the manual.
Instructions
1. Connect your antenna to the "Antenna In" coaxial input on the back of the DTV converter box. For best results, use an amplified antenna. Make sure that the antenna is plugged in and that the power is turned up to the highest level.
2. Connect the "TV Out" coaxial connection to the "Antenna In" input on the back of your VCR. Then line another coaxial cable from "Antenna Out" on the back of the VCR to "Antenna In" on your analog television set.
3. Choose whether you'd like to use channel 3 or 4 as the DTV channel on your set. Set the channel on the back of the DTV converter box. Tune your television set to the same channel.
4. Follow your DTV converter box's instructions for scanning and setting channels. Manually add and remove channels according to your preferences.
5. Find the menu option to monitor signal strength on your DTV converter box. Adjust the antenna for the best possible reception while watching the signal indicator. If adjusting the antenna itself does not give better reception, try moving the coaxial cable. This can also pick up television signals. If possible, tape the cable in the optimal position to an inconspicuous spot on the wall or the back of your TV stand. Making a loop out of the cable can also boost the signal.
6. Change the settings on your DTV converter box so that it will not power down after a few hours. Set your VCR to channel 3 or 4, whichever is appropriate. Set the DTV converter box to the channel you would like to record. You should now be able to see your chosen program clearly on the set. Press the record button on your VCR or create a program to record a show later on the VCR channel 3 or 4.
