Setup Guide For Sx Guitars

Proper setup of your SX guitar will give you a smooth action and eliminate buzzing when you play up the neck.

The SX line of electric guitars from Rondo Music are relatively inexpensive guitars that have nevertheless gained a reputation for being very well-made. The guitar ships fully stringed, but you'll want to set up the neck action and string height once it arrives. This compensates for humidity differences between the factory and your home; it also helps you achieve the string height (or "action") you feel most comfortable playing at. Setting up your SX, using the hex wrenches that should have come with the guitar, takes just a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Play the guitar, trying to play all the strings all the way up and down the neck. Play some bar chords as well. Note if the strings seem too hard to press or are too far away from the fret board. Also listen for string buzzing, particularly as you play up the neck. If the action is too high (the strings are too far away from the fret board), you'll want to add bow to the neck and/or lower the strings. If you hear buzzing, you'll want to add relief to the neck and/or raise the strings.

2. Set the guitar on its back. If your SX has a truss rod cover on the head stock, loosen the screw on the cover and swing it out of the way. Also detune the center two strings on the guitar (the D and G strings) to make room for the hex wrench.

3. To lower the action, insert the hex wrench in the socket at the top of the truss rod and make about an eighth of a turn to the right. To alleviate buzzing, make an eigth of a turn to the left.

4. Retune the D and G strings and play the guitar again. Continue to make small adjustments to the truss rod until you have eliminated buzzing and have the action about where you want it.

5. Fine tune the string height by raising or lowering the bridge. This is done either by turning adjustment screws on either side of the bridge with a screwdriver, or turning individual string saddles with a small hex wrench. Play the guitar after each adjustment to make sure you have corrected any problems and not introduced new ones.
