Connect An Auto Graphic Equalizer

Take control of your car stereo with a dedicated graphic equalizer.

For the discerning audiophile, the built-in equalizer settings of even a high-end car stereo head unit can leave a lot to be desired. If your stereo head unit offers RCA-type preamp outputs, you can add a traditional graphic equalizer in the signal path between your head unit and your amplifier. A dedicated graphic equalizer allows fine adjustment of several frequency ranges and can go a long way toward getting your stereo system to sound its best.

Instructions

1. Connect the power wire of your equalizer to a 12-volt power source that is always on. If you have installed a power supply block to your battery for your other components, for example, you can use the same source.

2. Connect your equalizer's remote wire to a power source that is only on when the key is in the accessory position or the car is running. Many installers use the fusebox contacts for the power windows. The remote wire turns the equalizer on and off so it doesn't drain battery power when you shut off the car.

3. Connect the RCA cables from the left and right outputs of your head unit to the corresponding inputs on your equalizer. Use red for right side connections and white for left.

4. Connect the RCA outputs of your equalizer to your amplifier. You should already have the necessary cables plugged into the outputs of your head unit.
