Instructions For Installing A Tivo Cable Card

Digital video recorders from TiVo provide users with a wide array of recording options, including TiVo's intuitive on-screen guide. To use your TiVo with a cable provider like Cox or Comcast, you must install a CableCARD decoder. A CableCARD is a device provided by your cable company that allows your TiVo to decode the encrypted cable streams. Without a CableCARD, your TiVo will not be able to record cable channels. Luckily, installing a CableCARD is a straightforward process that any TiVo user can do.


Instructions








1. Contact your cable provider and request a CableCARD. To record two channels at once, you either need two CableCARDs or a single Multi-stream CableCARD. Your cable provider can provide you with one or the other. Make sure you get the activation phone number as well.


2. Set up your TiVo. Connect the power cable to the back of the device. Connect an A/V cable from your TiVo to your television. All setups are slightly different, so refer to the documentation included with your TiVo for the best way to connect your TiVo to your TV. Connect a coaxial cable from the cable wall outlet to the cable input on your TiVo. Make sure not to connect the coax to the antenna input on the TiVo.


3. Write down the serial number on your cableCARD. You will need that number to activate the card later.


4. Turn on your TiVo and begin the guided setup. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your TiVo. Be sure to select "Cable Only" when asked, and select "Yes" when asked if you have a CableCARD.


5. Slide your CableCARD into Slot 1 on the front of your TiVo. The device will recognize the card and begin the installation process.


6. Call the activation number provided by your cable company when prompted to activate your CableCARD. After the card is activated, your cable company will send a signal to your TiVo letting it know the card has been activated.


7. Press "Clear" on the TiVo remote and select "Test Channels" from the on-screen menu. Scroll through the channels to make sure your TiVo is receiving channels. When you are satisfied, press "Clear" on the remote to go back to the menu.


8. Repeat the above steps if you wish to install a second CableCARD. Make sure to insert the CableCARD into Slot 2 on the front of your TiVo.








9. Select "Continue" from the on-screen menu to finish the process.
