Sony Xplod subwoofers are a popular choice with many car-audio enthusiasts and installers thanks to their sharp styling and solid bass performance. They're available in several different models and in sizes ranging from 8 to 15 inches. Xplod subwoofers are usually sold as "component" subwoofers--that is, the speaker doesn't come in an enclosure or sub box. It's up to the audio installer to take care of that. With some basic tools, this is a simple job for the do-it-yourselfer.
Instructions
1. Find the right size of enclosure for your subwoofer. There are two things to consider: the size of the opening and the volume of the box. The size of the opening is self-explanatory: If you have a 12-inch subwoofer, you want a box with a 12-inch enclosure. The second is dependent upon the subs specs. Check the subwoofer's manual and look for specs on the recommended box volume. Usually there will be a range of sizes, measured in cubic feet. When purchasing a box, make sure it falls within this range; otherwise, the sub's performance will be compromised.
2. Connect the wires of the subwoofer box to your subwoofer. The subwoofer box will have a set of external terminals for connecting an amplifier. Within the box, there will be wires connected to the terminal that you need to connect to the woofer. Find the wire marked "+" and connect it to the subwoofer terminal marked "+". Push down on the terminal to open a hole in the side of the terminal, slide the end of the wire in and release to clamp the wire into place. Do the same with the negative wire and terminal.
3. Place the subwoofer into the box opening. Have an assistant hold it firmly in place and drill small holes with your drill in the openings in the woofer's mounting flange. When the holes are drilled, screw a wood screw into each opening to hold the sub in place in the box.
4. Connect the speaker wire from your amplifier to the terminals on the side of the subwoofer box.
