Onkyo Htr530 Instructions

The Onkyo HT-R530 7.1 Channel Receiver is a powerful and welcome addition to any home theater setup. It features 110 watts per channel, multiple inputs and outputs for all your AV sources, Dolby Digital surround sound processing, and a full set of speakers to complete the cinema experience. Setting up this receiver is relatively easy but requires a basic knowledge of home audio and video equipment.

Placing the receiver

Place your Onkyo Receiver near your TV and home theater system and close to a reliable power source. Don't place it too far away from other components in your setup; long cable runs are troublesome, messy and expensive. Try not to stack anything on top of the receiver; you don't want anything blocking the top vents, as the receiver can get quite hot when playing movies and driving speakers at loud volumes. Place any other home theater components near the receiver so they are easy to hook up.

Connections

Once your receiver is placed, it's time to connect all your home theater components to it. Using the proper audio and video cables, connect your DVD player, VCR, game system and cable box to the receiver. Each component will occupy a different input, or set of inputs, and can be switched via the front panel buttons. There are even front panel audio and video inputs for easy connection of a camcorder, digital camera or game system.

Speaker installation and placement

Your Onkyo receiver comes with five speakers and a subwoofer for an optimal home theater experience. After you've attached the speaker grilles and plugged in your subwoofer, run the wires from the speakers to the speaker terminal located on the back panel of the receiver. Place the speakers in your room according to the diagram in the instruction manual: The front right/left speakers go on either side of the TV, the center channel goes under or over the TV, and the rear speakers are installed on either side of the listener at the back of the room. The subwoofer can go almost anywhere near the front wall, as its bass output is low enough to be non-directional.

Operation and other features

Once everything is installed and configured properly, it's time to turn on and enjoy your Onkyo receiver. Select the device you'd like to watch or listen to from the receiver's front panel. Use the device as you normally would and let the receiver do the rest. If you're watching video sources, make sure your TV is tuned to the correct video input.

The supplied remote control allows you to operate the receiver from a distance. It includes controls for most of the features on the receiver and can be programmed to operate other devices, such as the TV, DVD and CD player. See page 52 of the manual for more information about programming your remote.

Onkyo also includes special listening modes to enhance the quality of both surround and non-surround music sources. In addition to Dolby Digital and DTS surround modes, DSP modes add effects to the sound source to recreate a virtual soundstage, like Orchestra and TV Logic modes. These modes are accessible via the front panel and remote using the "Listening Mode" buttons.
