A Firewire cable can be used to transfer video data from a DV camera to a computer equipped with a Firewire jack.
Digital video (DV) cameras connect to a personal computer or laptop with either an IEEE 1394 cable, which is also known as Firewire, or with a USB cable that plugs into a standard USB port. Choosing the right cable to use depends on the camera model. Digital video cameras are typically sold with an audio-video cable for connecting the device to transfer video footage to a PC or laptop. Replacement cables are available at camera, electronics and computer stores.
Instructions
1. Lift the protective rubber flap off the connection port on the DV camera using a fingernail, then rotate the flap out of the way to expose the port. The connection port is typically along the back edge of the camera, but the location may vary depending on the model.
2. Insert the plug on the end of the Firewire or USB cable, depending on the camera model, into the port. The six-sided Firewire port aligns with the same outline shape of the port and inserts in one direction only. The USB plug also inserts in one direction only, with the arrow on the top of the plug facing upward.
3. Connect the plug on the other end of the cable to a corresponding port on the computer, either Firewire or USB.
4. Turn on the computer and wait for the "New Hardware Detected" message to appear on the monitor screen, indicating the computer recognizes the attached camera and is ready to communicate with the device.
