Remove The Ir Filter On A Sony Alpha

Creating captivating landscape shots like this is easy with an infrared filter.

Infrared, typically abbreviated as IR, filters are useful tools in any landscape photographer's bag. When placed over the lens of any film or digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera, the scene's highlights are made dark while shadowed areas glow brilliantly. Coupled with the Sony Alpha's 24 megapixel capability, an IR filter will turn a typical landscape into an entrancing and surreal space. When it is time to switch back to reality, however, the filter must be removed.

Instructions

1. Orient the camera so that the front of the lens faces you. Press the small release button on the right side of the lens and rotate it counterclockwise to remove it from the camera. Set the camera body aside for now.

2. Find the IR filter attached to the front end of the lens body. The filter will be labeled with its make and model number ("Hoya R72" is a very common IR filter).

3. Support the rear end of the lens with one hand and grip the edges of the filter with your other hand. Rotate the filter counterclockwise to remove it from the lens.

4. Clean the lens threads and both sides of the filter with a microfiber cloth before returning it to its carrying case.
