Reduce The Size Of A Picture With Free Software

Reducing the size of a picture makes it easier to view, email and upload.








As social networking websites have become more popular, the need to reduce the size pictures has grown. A large file can take a long time to upload. If it's too large, some website and programs won't allow it at all. Resizing a file will reduce the photo's dimensions and its file size. Several free programs make the task simple.


Instructions


1. Reduce the size of a picture with Irfanview (see Resources). This free program gives the user basic image editing abilities like cropping, altering colors and resizing. To reduce the size, select "Resize image" from the "Image" menu. Typing in dimensions smaller than the existing values will reduce the size. Experiment to see what size works best.


2. Reduce the size of a picture with Picasa (see Resources). In this Google application, it isn't so obvious reduces the picture size. Nevertheless, the process is simple once you figure it out. The trick is the "Export to Folder" option, located in the "File" menu. A window will appear, which enables you to reduce the size by reducing the image dimensions and then save the newly reduced image.








3. Reduce the size of a picture with your Web browser. Navigate to the "Shrink Pictures" link (see Resources) and scroll-down to the "Resize Images" box. After uploading your picture by clicking "Browse," you can choose from popular dimension settings or enter your own. For a smaller file size, select "Good" as the image quality.
