Make Video Glasses

You can create video glasses with a webcam and a pair of sunglasses to become a poor man's superspy.

Remember the spy glasses in Mission: Impossible? Inside the bridge of a pair of inconspicuous wire frame glasses, a video camera recorded everything the wearer saw without anyone else being the wiser. It's a clever way to commit a little covert espionage or have a cheap voyeuristic thrill. Unfortunately, the technology doesn't exist at the consumer level to have a pinpoint camera in a thin frame. However, by upgrading to a bulky pair of sunglasses and modifying a webcam, a discreet pair of video glasses can be made on the cheap.

Instructions

1. Unscrew the casing from the webcam, leaving the exposed camera and its wires. Cut a slit in the insulated tubing around the wires, gently pull them out of the tubing, and then discard it.

2. Measure the audio/video wires from the base of the camera and cut at 3 inches. Set the plugs aside for the moment. Cut three equal lengths of black wire, long enough to extend from your ear to your knee---this will give it enough length to stay hidden inside your clothes. Solder one end of the wires to the video cables. Solder the other end to the plugs. Place shrink tubing over the exposed portions of the cables and hold an open flame to it until it shrinks tight to the wires.

3. Hot glue the camera into the corner of one of the sunglasses lenses so that the camera aperture can see through it. Hot glue the wires along the length of the earpiece. Put the glasses on and run the wires down your shirt. Connect the plugs into the input of the MiniDV camcorder and tuck the camcorder into your pocket. Set the camera to record to use the video glasses.
