Requirements For Using Tivo

With Tivo, recording TV shows digitally is easy and quick. Record shows for playback at any time, with fast-forward and rewind options to catch a missed line, review a favorite part or skip commercials. However, not all TV set-ups are ideal for use with Tivo. Make sure of the requirements before purchasing your device.

Cable or Antenna

Tivo requires customers to have either cable television or a digital antenna. As of September 2010, Tivo and DirecTV had just renewed their partnership to provide the Tivo service to the satellite company's customers. Tivo service will not work with other satellite television providers.

Tivo Premiere Box

Tivo sends a receiver box a customer can connect to his television. Some cable companies provide proprietary digital video recorders, but most customers will need the Tivo box before using Tivo service.

High-Speed Internet

Though optional, a high-speed Internet connection enables the use of several Tivo features, such as streaming and on-demand video. Services such as Netflix and Amazon On Demand work with Tivo through a high-speed connection like cable or DSL, as does YouTube.

Home Phone Line

In areas where high-speed Internet is unavailable, Tivo Premiere may be hooked up to a home phone line with the use of a Tivo Home Phone Line Adapter. The adapter must be purchased separately. This connection, or some form of Internet connection, allows Tivo to find and record shows and update the device's software.
