Facts Wireless Surround Sound

Wireless speakers and surround sound home theater systems are quickly becoming the norm across the globe, replacing the messier corded varieties. They may seem complicated, but wireless speakers actually work similarly to speakers that come with cords.

How They Work

Wireless surround sound speakers are virtually the same as any other speakers, except that they come with two additional components: a receiver and a transmitter. When you play a DVD or audio disc, the sound goes from your stereo to the transmitter as it would if you were using wired speakers. The difference comes in the receiver on the speakers, which picks up the sound waves in the same way your radio picks up FM stations.

Benefits

The obvious benefits come from having less clutter caused by cords and wires. You may also enjoy a longer range, as cordless surround sound speakers can be moved from place to place as long as they remain 150 to 300 feet from the transmitter. This even works through walls, so moving the speakers into another room is not a problem.

Problems

Just like with a radio, from time to time you may get static in your signal. This can be caused by inclement weather or from moving the speakers too far from the transmitter.

Special Equipment

Most modern stereo systems come with an FM transmitter already included inside. If you have an older stereo system that you are using with your home theater, you will need to purchase a separate FM adapter and hook it to the stereo to use wireless surround sound speakers.

Higher Technology

There are surround sound speakers that use the same satellite technology as a Bluetooth phone headset to pick up sound waves and allow you to listen to your favorite movies and music wirelessly. These are often steeply priced and may require a professional installation to ensure proper sound quality.
