Call Poland From The United States

Perhaps because of its history of Soviet domination or the brutality inflicted upon its citizens during World War II, many people think Poland must be a grim place to visit. What they don't know is that Poland is a beautiful country, home to Baltic coastal villages, the lush Tatry Mountains, and the culturally rich Krakow. One other thing you need to know about Poland is place a phone call - the better to plan a visit.

Instructions

1. Determine what time it is in Poland. Poland is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means it is 6 hours later in Poland than it is on the East Coast of the United States, and 9 hours later than it is on the West Coast.

2. Remember that in recent years the Polish phone system has undergone a major overhaul, which means that many phone numbers may be out of date. New numbers are typically seven digits; old numbers were six digits.

3. Keep a phrase book handy and brush up on your Polish. While many Poles working in the tourist industry speak some English, you'll find that many others don't speak any English at all.

4. Dial 011, the international access code.

5. Dial 48, the Polish country code.

6. Remove the 0 from the beginning of the city code. Some city codes for major cities in Poland include 022 for Warsaw, 012 for Krakow and 058 for Gdansk.

7. Dial the remaining digits.
