There are many good reasons for bypassing a motion detector. Perhaps you’ve forgotten your passcode and want to enter your home late at night without tripping the motion detector. If it’s a windy day, whipping tree branches can also cause a false alarm. Bypassing your motion detector allows you to enter your home without setting off the alarm. Here are six ways to go about it.

1. Press the bypass button on your alarm system. This is an easy way to prevent your motion detector from going off. The bypass button will probably be on the front of the detector, under the sensor. Press and hold the button until an amber light goes on to let you know it’s deactivated.
2. Move very slowly. Depending on how sensitive your detector is, you may be able to get where you want to go without triggering the sensor. This method may also take a little bit of practice.
3. Experiment with the passcode. If you’ve forgotten your passcode, try using numbers that are significant to you. Most of the time, people use anniversaries or birthdates. If you really don’t know what the code could be, try lightly brushing the keypad with fingerprinting dust to see which keys have been touched most frequently. Try these numbers in different orders until you find the right ones.
4. Cover the motion detector’s sensor with a piece of cardboard so it won’t be able to detect any movement at all. Move the cardboard slowly when you’re sliding it over the sensor.
5. Trigger enough false alarms that the company monitoring your alarm will refuse to come to your house anymore. This can be a costly technique, as many companies will charge you for false alarms after a predetermined number. It can also be dangerous, as it will compromise your security in the event of a real breach.
6. Cut the power leading to the motion detector. Be aware that some models will have a battery backup, which means the sensor will continue to operate and the device can still be triggered, even when taken off the power grid.
