Digital Cameras For Children

A basic digital camera often suffices for kids.

As technology continues to advance, items that used to be luxuries have become increasingly affordable. One such product is the digital camera, with low-end cameras now available at low-enough prices that make them suitable to purchase for children, which teaches them to properly use and care for a camera without risking damage to a camera that costs several hundred dollars.

Memory Options

For a camera being purchased for a very small child that will only be used for playing around the home, a simple digital camera with a small memory bank is often enough to make the child happy. For an older kid that will be going on school trips, however, selecting an option that allows for memory card storage ensures they won't run out of space on their camera before lunchtime during a field trip.

Picture Quality

Picture quality is the primary area that a kid's digital camera struggles when compared to a high-end model, however, when providing a camera for a child, the higher resolutions that are usually useful for taking larger pictures, such as landscapes, are not required. Selecting a camera with fewer megapixels, at or below one megapixel, will allow you to find a camera that is good enough to make the child happy without breaking the bank.

Features

While many of the advanced accessories available in digital cameras are not required to keep a child happy with the purchase, there are some basic features that can add a great deal of value to a camera without increasing costs too much. A flash allows the camera to take pictures indoors, while a USB port allows the camera to be hooked up to a computer quickly and easily for storing pictures.

Lessons

Providing a child with his or her own digital camera is an excellent opportunity to teach him or her lessons that will one day prepare him or her for owning more expensive pieces of technology. With the camera, the child is responsible for ensuring the camera is not dropped or damaged, or left somewhere unattended and forgotten about, leading to it being lost. With the experience gained with the low-cost camera, the child will learn to take better care when the time comes for a more advanced camera.
