Accidental deletion of photos or file corruption are common to users of digital cameras and camcorders. The photos or videos are not necessarily lost and gone forever. With free software, a card reader and a computer, you can recover your "lost" images and movies. Many popular cameras use the xD card -- Olympus, Fuji and Toshiba -- and this card fits most multi-card readers.
Instructions
1. Download free image recovery software from download.com. The site screens all files for viruses. Choose the software that best fits your camera model and computer operating system.
2. Extract and run the software. Direct the program to the xD card via the program menu.
3. Wait while the software analyzes the entire xD card. It will often recover several layers of data. Stopping mid-search potentially damages other existing files and hampers recovery efforts. Larger cards in long-term use will take a while.
4. Examine the search results. Select the images you wish to retain.
5. Save the recovered and retained files from the xD card to a new, clearly marked folder on your computer. Burn the files to a backup source, such as a CD or DVD, and store in a safe location.
