Get High Definition Programming

High-definition programming takes advantage of the increased storage capacity in a digital signal to pack more information into its broadcast. That means the images on TV are much sharper and clearer than they would be with the old analog signal. High-definition programming is fairly standard for most prime time network shows as well as those on many cable stations. To receive them, you simply need to have the right sort of equipment.

Instructions

1. Check your TV to make sure it is HD compatible. Most new models come with an internal HD tuner, allowing it to receive HD signals automatically. The owner's manual should state whether such a tuner is in place. If it isn't, you can purchase an HD tuner, which sits on top of your TV like a cable box, at any electronics store.

2. Contact your cable or satellite service and ask if you are receiving HD programming. Cable companies usually offer some form of "digital service," which includes HD programming. Satellite services offer similar options. In both cases, the companies will charge an additional monthly fee to provide high-definition service. They can set you up very easily if you don't currently carry it.

3. Check your TV listings to see which programs are available in high definition. Currently, most "higher-end" shows are broadcast in HD as well as standard definition. This includes prime-time network shows like "Lost" and "American Idol," high-end cable shows such as "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Closer," movies on premium cable stations such as HBO and live sporting events (at least a handful of NFL games are broadcast in HD every Sunday). Syndicated shows broadcast out of prime time, shows broadcast locally and "filler" shows on basic cable stations usually don't broadcast in HD. TV listings such as those at TVGuide.com (see Resources below) cite which shows are in HD and which shows aren't.

4. Tune in to the HD broadcast show and watch as normal.
