What Are The Default Settings For The Olympus E520

The Olympus E520 digital camera debuted in August 2008. This camera uses the Four Thirds camera system, which features a larger sensor than on most compact digital cameras and interchangeable lenses. The E520 can shoot in full auto or full manual mode, and everywhere in between. You can get pretty lost in the customizable options, so it's helpful to know get back to the E520's default settings. Olympus doesn't list the default settings, but shows you revert to them.

Saved Settings

The E-520 functions like a DSLR camera in a few key ways -- it has an interchangeable lens and a large sensor, but it also has customizable shooting modes and retains your settings when you power the camera off. This is deliberate; the camera assumes that when you turn it off, you'll come back to it soon and remembers how you were shooting. Designed for convenience, this feature can be a nuisance when you want to get back to how you were shooting out of the box.

Factory Default Settings

For when you've been playing with the shooting settings and can't remember get back to the easy way of taking pictures right out of the box: Olympus has you covered. The E520 has a built-in command to restore all of the settings to the factory default. Press "Menu" with the camera on, then choose the camera icon with the little "1" beside it. Choose "Custom Reset" for a list of default options, and then choose "Reset" (without any numbers beside it) to revert the camera to its basic, default settings.

New Defaults

The E520 also has settings memory beyond turning the camera off and on. If you find a particular way of shooting that you really like, you can save your current settings as a "default" setting. Press "Menu" at any time when you have settings that you like and then select the camera icon with the "1" beside it. You'll see "Reset 1" and "Reset 2" and a "Set" option. Highlight the preset you wish to set and press the right arrow on the control pad. Press "Okay" to apply your current settings to this preset. You can also set "Reset 2," and then revert to these settings later.

Basic Shooting

Even though the E520 has a factory default settings option, you can still take pictures quickly and easily without resetting your camera every time. Rotate the shooting mode dial on the top of the camera to "Auto" to shoot in the easiest mode. On this mode, the E520 adjusts the shutter speed, aperture, white balance and ISO, overriding any changes you may have made to these settings.
