The red-eye effect in photographs appears when the pupil of the eye of a person in the photo shows up as red, rather than black. This phenomenon commonly occurs in color photographs when the camera is being operated in ambient low light. The camera flash simply reflects light from the back of the eyeball, bouncing off blood and creating a red color. Although the red-eye effect in photographs might be annoying, it is one of the easiest flaws to correct in photo editing software.

Removing the Red-Eye Effect
1. Access the camera's red-eye reduction tool, which is found in many modern cameras. With a simple click of a button or turn of a dial, the camera will automatically adjust to prevent red-eye. Alternately, avoid using a flash when taking photographs, because the flash plays the main role in creating the red-eye effect.
2. Use photo-editing software for photos that have red-eye effects. Many operating systems, such as Windows XP, offer built-in tools for minor editing to photos. Double-click a photo to open it to a full-size screen. Right-click the photo, and select "Edit." Click on "Fix red eye," and the computer will prompt you to draw a rectangle around the image that is being edited. The program will automatically fix the red-eye flaw in the photo.
3. Use free online photo-editing tools, such as Picnik. Picnik allows you to edit many factors of a photograph, including resizing, adding designs and removing red-eye. Upload the photo on the website, and choose the "edit" button. Click on the "red eye" button, and the program will prompt you to click on the center of the eye that needs to have red-eye effect removed. When the center of the eye is clicked, the red-eye flaw will be adjusted to a natural, black pupil color. There is also an option for pet-eye correction on Picnik. Picnik also offers paid subscriptions for more advanced editing tools.
