Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries provide electronics and hybrid vehicles with more power in a smaller size. The batteries are lightweight and environmentally-friendly. Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries also last longer than other batteries. Recent advances in research and development has also provided a glimmer of hope for long distance electric cars.
Identification
Currently, there are two types of Lithium batteries: Lithium and Lithium-ion. Lithium batteries are pure Lithium metal while Lithium-ion batteries are compounds. Lithium batteries are not rechargeable while Lithium-ion batteries are. Both types are typically used in electronics. Non-rechargeable Lithium batteries come in standard cell sizes such as AA, AAA, C and D but Lithium-ion do not out of concern for people confusing chargers for nickel cadmium batteries as being interchangeable with Lithium-ion.
Long Lasting
Both Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries hold their charge longer than other batteries. In the case of the non-rechargeable Lithium batteries, that can be years. Lithium-ion batteries can be recharged for years and keep the charge long enough for a video camera to get through most events.
Lighter
Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries weigh less than their nickel cadmium counterparts. They can also be more compact than them.
Environmentally-friendly
Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries are more environmentally-friendly than other batteries. The materials used to create the batteries do not pose a threat to the environment.
Higher Voltage
The Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries have a higher voltage than other batteries. This means that it takes fewer cells, and overall batteries, to provide the same amount of power compared to other batteries.
Better Electric Car Batteries
Scientists at the University of Waterloo have come up with a new Lithium battery which combines Lithium with Sulfur and nanotechnology. This new battery could power electric cars for three times as long as current Lithium-ion batteries. The technology could be available in five to ten years.
Recyclability
Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries are highly recyclable. So while Lithium is mined from salt brine, resources would not need to be depleted to make new batteries.
