A big-screen TV uses a projector to display images.
You can "create" a big-screen television -- and save a ton of money in the process -- by purchasing a LCD projector that connects to your cable or satellite TV. If you are unable to purchase an LCD projector, you can instead transform your TV into a projector by enclosing the TV screen with cardboard and adding a magnification lens to project a visual image.
Instructions
Using an LCD Projector
1. Get a liquid crystal display (LCD) video projector. You can find a model at such stores as Best Buy, Circuit City and Walmart.
2. Connect the stereo wiring connectors to a multi-channel surround-sound system or harness adapter.
3. Aim the video image on a wall or video screen to obtain a clear video image. Move the LCD video projector to where the picture is big enough to view on the screen. If you are unable to find an LCD projector, you will need to manufacture a projector box around your television set.
Assemble the Projector Pieces
4. Assess the length and height of your television display screen. Measure just the screen, not the frame bordering it.
5. Use two open-ended cardboard boxes. Make sure that one cardboard box is smaller than the other box, yet large enough to fit a television or TV monitor within it.
6. Use a box cutter to cut four pieces from a cardboard box that is the same height and width as the television's screen. All four pieces should be 45-cm long.
7. Apply dark-colored spray paint on the boxes. Make sure to spray every one of the cardboard boxes black on all sides. Wait for the paint to dry.
Construct the Projector
8. Assemble the four pieces into a box container that has a single opening and is larger than the TV monitor. Use duct tape to attach the pieces.
9. Attach several layers of duct tape to the opposite ends of the cardboard piece to create "tabs." Tape one of the dark-colored frames completely around the display screen, stretching 45 cm in length. Attach the Fresnel lens to the front side of the cardboard piece that has a 17-cm hole, making certain the lens covers the hole.
10. Apply adequate tape to create a light-but-snug seal around the box on the TV screen. It should protrude from the screen like a cylinder-shaped tube.
11. Insert the TV or computer-system monitor into the larger assembled box. The television with the cardboard projector will generate its own sound. Ensure that you make use of the external audio systems for more effective quality and that the video transmitter (TV, cable box) is linked to a good audio system.
12. Position the television or LCD projector so the display upon the wall is the same size as the television screen.
Display the Picture
13. Cover a wall with white sheets.
14. Place the lens piece inside the box, slipping it through the opening until it is in the middle of the box. Move the lens so the even side in the Fresnel lens is facing the display screen. Adjust the lens by gently pulling it backwards or forwards within the box until you get the view you desire.
15. Activate the TV screen to project a picture on the wall. Place the television onto a table about 2 feet from the sheet. Switch off all lights in the room and cover all window shades. Aim the picture on the wall so that the video image is clear.
