Synchronize Multiple Cameras To A Video Switcher

Multiple cameras at an event help you get greater coverage and mean more editing in post-production. You can set up the multiple cameras on a video switcher for greater ease in handling all the video you're recording or help you have a more interesting live broadcast with different camera angles.

Instructions

1. Determine if your switcher needs to be timed or genlocked. Newer switchers are generally timed, while older ones require camera inputs. Look for "Ref In", "BB" and "S/C". Identify which type your camera is. Only professional cameras can be genlocked with a BNC connector. Otherwise, you will need a Time Base Connector (TBC).

2. Gather two equal-length BNC cables for each camera you want to sync together. They need to reach from the camera position to the switcher. Prep the cables by labeling the ends. The ends of the cables should be the same on the cable. Both ends of one cable should be "REF" the other cable ends should be "VID." Do this for each pair of cables.

3. Connect the "REF" end to the "BB" connectors on the switcher. The other "REF" end goes to "REF IN" or "GEN IN" on a camera. One end of the "VID" cable goes to an INPUT connector on the switch and the other end of the cable goes to "VIDEO OUT" connector on the camera. Repeat this process for each camera.

4. Hook a BNC cable between a color monitor and the "PROGRAM OUT" connector on the back of the switcher. Go through and adjust the settings as needed for a clear picture. This may take some trial and error to get it to where the colors are even and the screen doesn't jump.
