Upgrading a Samsung Blackjack II smartphone to Windows Mobile 6.1 ensures you can take advantage of the latest Windows Mobile software and utilities. For example, Windows Mobile 6.1 offers a new version of the Pocket Internet Explorer browser, an updated user interface for non-touch devices like the Blackjack II, improved Bluetooth support for hands-free headsets and car interfaces, and a new version of Office Mobile. However, in order to complete the upgrade, you must have a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Instructions
1. Download the Windows Mobile 6.1 updater for the Samsung Blackjack II. It is available for download from the "Support for Blackjack II" link provided under Resources. Once you load the site, choose the "Software" tab to find the Windows Mobile 6.1 installer.
2. Verify that Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center is installed on the computer you are using to upgrade your Blackjack II to Windows Mobile 6.1. You can download the software directly from Microsoft if it is not installed on your computer. Do not have the Blackjack II connected to the computer when installing the software.
3. Insert the CD that accompanied your BlackJack II into the computer and locate "Setup.exe" in the "\OEM\Applications\SAMSUNG_MODEM" folder.
4. Click "Install" in the driver installation window to save the drivers to your computer.
5. Click "OK" when a window appears, telling you that the drivers were successfully installed.
6. Open the "Start" menu on your Blackjack II and choose the "Settings" menu. Open the "Connections" options and then choose "USB." Change the connection type from "ActiveSync" to "Modem" using the directional pad. Press the left soft key to finalize the selection. Press "OK" when prompted to acknowledge that ActiveSync will be disabled.
7. Connect Blackjack II to the computer using a USB cable, at which point the Samsung modem driver configured in Step 3 is installed on the computer along with other Blackjack II drivers.
8. Click the Start menu and type "devmgmt.msc" in the search box at the bottom of the menu to load the computer's Device Manager window.
9. Click the "+" next to the Modems tab and verify "SAMSUNG Mobile Modem" is listed. Do the same next to the "Ports" (COM & LPT) menu to verify the "Diagnostic Serial Port" is listed. Also, expand the "Universal Serial Bus" tab and make sure "SAMSUNG USB Composite Device" is shown. Disconnect the USB cable from the Blackjack II once this info is confirmed.
10. Backup data from the BlackJack II. Press the "Start" menu and open "Settings." Choose "Connections" and then "USB" to change the connection type from "Modem" back to "ActiveSync." Reconnect the USB cable to the phone and select the data you want to back up using ActiveSync. Disconnect the USB cable after finishing the backup.
11. Close all programs on your computer and Blackjack II and then disconnect the USB cable from the phone.
12. Double-click the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade file you downloaded from the Samsung website. Enter "5688" in the ID field and "9231" in the Key field. Click "Confirm." Check the warning check box and click "Next." The check box makes you acknowledge that the upgrade erases all data from your phone.
13. Connect the USB cable to the Blackjack II and wait for Windows Mobile Device Center to load automatically. If on a laptop, verify that it is plugged into the wall so it does not enter hibernation or sleep mode. Check the confirmation box and click "Next."
14. Wait for the Blackjack II and computer to negotiate a connection, at which point "The device is ready to be downloaded" is shown on screen. Select "Start" to update the version of Windows Mobile to 6.1. The upgrade process will show multiple progress bars, and it can take some time depending on the speed of your computer.
15. Click "Done" at the "Download complete!" screen, which verifies the operating system on your phone was properly upgraded. After confirming the completion of the download, the Blackjack II automatically restarts, at which point you can disconnect the USB cable from the Blackjack.
16. Reset the device by entering "*2767*3855#" when the phone is at the "Today" screen. This erases the memory of the device so that no remnants of the old Windows Mobile installation remain.
17.Verify the Windows Mobile version on the Blackjack II. Type "*#1234#" to view the software information for the phone. The PDA and Phone fields should read "i617UCHJ1."
