Tether Apps For The Iphone

Your iPhone can be utilized as a Wi-Fi hotspot on the go by enabling what is called "tethering" on your phone. This will allow mobile devices and Wi-Fi-enabled computers to access the Internet through your iPhone. This is a feature that AT&T began offering with their iPhone OS 4 operating system. OS 4 comes standard beginning with the iPhone 4, and is available for download for the 3G and 3GS versions of iPhone, which were the versions that preceded the iPhone 4. By updating to OS 4, you can utilize applications on other devices by tethering to your iPhone.

Instructions

1. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer. As of October 2010, this is version 10. You can do this by pulling open iTunes, which should bring up an automatic update. If this does not occur, open iTunes and simply click on the "iTunes" tab in the menu bar. Scroll down and select "Check for Updates," which should walk you through downloading the latest version of iTunes.

2. Connect your iPhone to your computer. With iTunes still open on your computer, use the included USB cord to connect to an open USB ports on your computer. Doing so should bring up an iPhone icon on the left-hand side-bar of the iTunes window. If iTunes is not currently opened, plugging in your iPhone to the computer should automatically open iTunes.

3. Install the iPhone update. Highlight the iPhone icon on the left-hand side-bar. The bottom of the iTunes window will have an icon to "Check for Updates." Clicking on this will pull up the available updates, and another option to "Download and Install." Clicking on this icon will install the OS 4 operating system onto your iPhone 3 or 3GS.

4. Change your iPhone bundle to include tethering. By managing your AT&T account online or on the phone, you can access and change the data plan that you have. The three options for personal phone line data plans are "200 MB (megabytes)", "2 GB (gigabytes)" and "2 GB with tethering." This is in reference to the amount of data that you are allowed to download. The tethering option allows for you to utilize your iPhone as a mobile Wi-Fi device.
