Wire For Motion Sensor Lights

Change your porch light into a motion sensor light and save on electricity.

The outside of your home can be a little spooky at night. A constant flood light wastes energy and flipping on a porch light when you hear a noise can be too little-too late. Consider installing a motion sensor light on the porch or in place of a flood or standard porch light. The wiring is fairly simple, and the light will alert you to movement outside your home.

Instructions

1. Turn the power off at the circuit breaker to ensure that you won't get shocked. You should never work on lighting with the power on.

2. Unscrew the casing that is holding the light on the wall. Use a screwdriver or drill to take out the screws.

3. Pull the existing light fixture off the wall carefully. Hold it in one hand while you untwist the wires from the house wires. Once disconnected, lay the fixture down and pick up the motion sensor light.

4. Strip the ends of the wires on the new light so you expose enough to twist connect to the house wiring.

5. Twist the wires on the motion sensor to the wires running from the house. The wires are always coated with different colored plastic so that you know which is which. Black are live wires. White are neutral wires. And green are ground wires. Ground wires can also be plain copper without any coating. You might or might not have a ground wire running from the house. If not, then tuck the ground wire on the fixture back into the casing and out of the way.

6. Tear off electrical tape and wrap it around the ends of the wires where they are twisted together. Once covered, screw on wire screw caps to secure them.

7. Tuck the wiring into the casing and place the fixture up against the wall. Use the hardware that came with the light to mount it to the wall. Drill the screws through the casing and into the wall.
