Connecting A Camera To A Computer Without A Usb Cable

Connect a firewire cable from a video camera to your computer system.

Although video cameras typically connect to a computer via a USB data cable, it is possible to use two other connection methods. These methods are via firewire cable and RCA audio/video cable. Although not all computers have these two cable connections, it is possible to use an adapter or externally install hardware that connects the video camera to the computer system.

Instructions

1. Check the computer for a firewire port. This port is similar in size to a USB connection, however one end has a curved side and there is a "Y" shaped icon next to it.

2. Insert the firewire cable into the firewire port on the video camera, then plug the opposite end of the cable into the firewire port on the computer.

3. Install a video capture card onto your computer, if you want to use an RCA to 3.5mm audio/video cable. There are two different capture card types: The first installs internally into one of the PCI card slots along the computer's motherboard, while the second is an external card that connects directly to a USB port on the computer. Once the video capture card is installed, all drivers and provided software must be installed for the computer to detect and use the connection card.

4. Plug the 3.5mm end of the cable into the the "A/V Out" port on the video camera, then connect the RCA ends of the cable into the "Video In" ports on the video capture card.
