Nikon N80 Guide

The N80 supports a wide range of Nikkor lenses

The Nikon N80 is a modern, 35mm film single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. It supports most Nikon F mount lenses and a number of mid- to high-end features, such as automatic bracketing of photographs and automatic focusing. With a built-in flash, the N80, which was sold as an F80 outside of the United States, is a solid body for an advanced amateur. It is also good as a spare body for professional photographers.

Metering Systems

The N80 has three metering systems. The most modern is 3D matrix metering, where the entire frame is analyzed and exposure is set based on the amount of light throughout the photograph. It supports the older center-weighted metering method, where only light in the center of the frame is analyzed. The third mode is spot metering, where only the light in the center focus point is used to calculate exposure.

Program Modes

The N80 has a program mode in which aperture and shutter speed will be automatically selected for proper exposure. In addition, it has an aperture priority mode. In this mode, you set the aperture, and the body automatically selects the shutter speed for proper exposure. The camera also supports shutter priority mode, where you set the shutter, and the body sets the best aperture for proper exposure. The N80 also supports full manual operation where the photographer can select shutter and aperture.

Focusing Points and Modes

The N80 has five selectable focus points. You can change the selected focus points using a rocker switch on the back of the camera. It supports single focus points and motion detection, which changes the focus point as an object moves in the viewfinder. There are three focus modes. Continuous auto-focus changes the focus as an object moves in the viewfinder. Single auto-focus allows you to lock on to a single focus point. With the camera set in manual focus, focusing is done using the focus ring on the lens.

Built-In Flash

The N80 has a built-in flash low powered that pops up from above the viewfinder. Although useful for photographs that are close to the camera, it isn't a powerful enough flash for photographs more than 10 to 12 feet away.

Custom Settings

The N80 supports a number of custom settings. Grid-lines in the view finder can be turned on or off. Focus features, such as closest subject priority options for autofocusing, are set in the custom settings as well as several options for film loading and rewinding.
