How Do Ductless Air Conditioners Work

With ductless air conditioners, ductwork is not required. Although they can be used in a residence, ductless air conditioning units are extremely popular in commercial buildings.

Main Components

The four main components of a ductless air conditioner are the condensing unit, evaporator coil units, thin refrigerant lines and a hand-held wireless remote or wall mount to control the system.

Condensing Unit

The condensing unit is normally located or stored outdoors and contains the compressor. This component typically serves multiple evaporator coil units inside the exterior walls.

Evaporator Coil Units

The evaporator coil units are located in "air handler" enclosures, which also contain blower fans and filters, and are installed on the interior walls near the ceiling.

Thin Refrigerant Lines

The refrigerant lines are usually made of copper tubing, and these thin lines connect the indoor unit to the outdoor unit.

Ductless Split Air Conditioning System

This system offers "zone control," or room-by-room temperature control. This system can be controlled to minimizing overcooling by only cooling occupied rooms or spaces and allowing the air in other areas to be turned down.
