Charge My Cell Phone Without A Charger

The answer to this is "no" - you cannot charge the battery in your cell phone without a charger. There has to be an outside source of power to re-charge the battery in your cell phone. The good news is, however, that you do have some alternatives for charging the battery on your cell phone which will allow you flexibility.

Basics

The most common chargers for cell phones come in two types. First is the wall charger that you plug into the wall outlet in your home or office. This is the unit that is supplied as a standard charging source that comes with your cell phone.

The next is the car-charger. This unit plugs into the 12-volt outlet (cigarette lighter) in your car and supplies enough voltage to charge your cell phone's battery.

Both of these options are acceptable with this one caveat: Use only the manufacturer-approved chargers. The reason is that if you use one that is not approved, it might void the manufacturer's warranty if it causes damage to your cell phone.

Battery to Battery Chargers

These units use standard batteries that you can purchase off of the shelf at most stores. They provide temporary power for your cell phone with little or no charging. These are good for emergencies if your battery dies and you need to make a call.

External Battery Chargers

These are batteries that have enough power to charge your cell phone fully. These require electrical power to charge them before you can use them.

There is also another alternative to the electrical external battery chargers: the hand-winding unit. You've seen the flashlights with the crank that powers the unit after you've turned it enough times, right? It is the same concept, only with an adapter to supply power to your cell phone battery. Beware, though, if your battery is completely dead, this unit will not charge it up at all.

Solar Chargers

Just as the name indicates, you can charge your battery on your cell phone with a solar charger. These require direct sunlight and take a long time to perform the charging, so they are somewhat impractical. But, if you are in a location where there is no electrical current at all, it might be your best and only option.

The Future

Taiwan is developing a hydrogen-based charger for cell phones. It is projected to be available in 2012. They are serious about providing a 'green' solution that might include other chargers for additional applications as well.

Conclusion

Selecting a charging option for your cell phone is based on two things. Need and price. What are the requirements for your charging needs: convenience or necessity? That will drive the second issue of what price are you willing to pay to fulfill the need.
