Instructions For A Nikon D40

The D40 is a entry level digital single lens reflex camera manufactured by Nikon.

Released in December 2006, the Nikon D40 is a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera that is designed for the entry level or first time DSLR photographer. The camera features a 6.1 megapixel charge coupled device (CCD) DX sensor that has a 1.5 field for view (FOV) crop. This means that a 50mm lens attached to the camera has the same field of view as a 75mm lens (50 x 1.5 = 75).

Instructions

1. Insert a fully charged battery into the compartment located in the bottom of the camera. Insert an empty SD memory card into the side compartment on the Nikon D40. Turn the camera on by rotating the collar switch that surrounds the shutter release.

2. Press the "Menu" button located on the rear left side of the camera and toggle through the menu screens using the four-way controller on the rear of the camera until you find the "Quality" settings. Press the "OK" button located in the center of the four-way controller to select this menu.

3. Use the four-way controller to change the value in the "Quality" to "Large/Fine", which gives you the best JPEG setting in terms of file size and quality of image. This setting uses more memory on your card, which results in less pictures being stored on the card.

4. Press the "Menu" button again and use the four-way controller to navigate to the "White Balance" menu. Change the value in this field to match the your particular shooting conditions. When shooting JPEGs it is important to change the white balance as the lighting conditions change. There is an "Automatic" setting that can be used for all conditions, however, manually changing the white balance produces pictures with a more accurate color profile.

5. Turn the round exposure mode dial on the top right of the camera to "S", which is the semi-automatic program mode for "Shutter priority" shooting. In this mode, you select the shutter speed, and the camera selects the corresponding aperture to produce the best possible picture.

6. Hold the camera up to your eye, press the shutter release halfway down to engage the camera's metering and exposure systems. Compose your picture in the viewfinder, and when you are pleased with the image in the viewfinder, press the shutter release to take the picture.
