Improve Low Light Recording With A Pen Video Cam

If your camera has a mount for it, a tripod can be invaluable in improving low light video recording.

Improving low light video recording, especially when using a pen camcorder ( a small, pocket camcorder that literally is designed to look like a pen) is quite difficult. That's because a camera, or a camcorder, at its very core is a light-gathering device. The more light there is for the camera to "see," the better your picture will become. When you are working in a low light situation, you are providing the camera with the exact opposite of what it needs to work. That said, there are some things you can try in order to improve the picture.

Instructions

1. Attach your camera to a tripod if it has a tripod mount. If it doesn't have one, find a steady place to rest the camera, such as a table or chair. Even if you need to hold the camera the entire time, simply placing it on top of a stationary object, such as the back of a chair will help with low lighting situations.

2. Focus your camera and keep it set at that focus. Don't keep adjusting the focus (if your camera allows you to adjust focus at all). Doing so will only make the camera take worse pictures in low light.

3. Stay close to your subject. The further away you are, the more zoom you need to use, the worse the picture will be. Even if your camera offers optical zoom (i.e. it physically changes the length of the lens rather than simply digitally enhancing the picture to make it appear closer), you will be closing off more light by zooming.

4. Shoot outdoors at night when the moon is full. This will allow your low lighting situation to benefit from the increased moonlight.

5. Clean the lens of your camera with a soft cloth. Dust particles, especially on small lenses, often degrade video quality in low light situations.

6. Ask your subjects to move around as little as possible. When working in low light situations, video quality is often improved by reducing motion.
